Van Buren Schools Delay First Day Due To Road Blockages Created By Storms

Storm damage delayed the first day of school in Van Buren County.

School Director Jared Copeland said based on road reports around the county, the decision was made to delay school until Wednesday.

“Our county still had some damage as far as trees in roads and power lines down and things like that,” Copeland said. “So we thought it best to hold off one day. And I know that’s an unusual start to the school year but just wanted to make sure everyone was safe and taken care of so we start off on the right foot tomorrow.”

Sheriff Michael Brock said multiple county roads were blocked throughout the day yesterday but as of 6 a.m. the only road left to clear was Van Winkle on the east side of the county. He said the county highway department did a great job clearing with the help of TDOT and the community.

“A lot of folks working in Fall Creek Falls,” Brock said. “A lot of folks, a lot of the Mennonite Community came out and worked on Old 111 in the Piney area. So we’re just real thankful for all the help we got from the good folks in Van Buren County.”

Brock said low lying limbs remain and there is a lot of debris, but as a whole the roads are open and passable. He advises that the community be conscientious that there could be some limbs and branches hanging close to the road or cut on the roadside.

“In some of the areas where were we cut trees off of the roadway, there’s not much of a shoulder there,” Brock said. “So just be cautious when you see the debris and leaves on the road.”

Brock said specific areas for caution include Baker Mountain as well as Piney, Fall Creek Falls, and Mooneyham. He said specific roads include Myers Road, Groves Road, and Van Winkle Road.

“All of the services that came out and worked yesterday and last night and all through the night are greatly appreciated,” Brock said. “And we’re very thankful that to our knowledge there were no injuries reported.”
