Van Buren Commission Appoints New Chairs, Committees

Van Buren County Commission has approved Commissioner Terry Hickey as its new chairman.

Hickey was one of two nominated for the position with commissioner Cale Crain. Hickey has served on the commission for three years, after he was elected to fill a vacancy.

“I’m a little nervous and I will make mistakes, I’m human, and I promise you I will make mistakes,” Hickey said. “But we’ll try to find the answer in our hearts and minds and do the best we can.”

Crain will serve as Hickey’s co-chair. Hickey said his first order of business as the commission’s new leader will be to set up a work session to discuss preliminary ideas on how they want the county to move forward.

After questions from new Commissioner Brick Wall, County Attorney Howard Upchurch clarified that the appointments should serve for a one-year term, as opposed to the entirety of the four-year term.

“It doesn’t have to be the same chairman, just a year-t0-year basis,” Upchurch said. “(…) (For Committees A and B)That’s not addressed by statute, my opinion as County Attorney would be that it should follow the same statutory procedure that’s set forth for the whole body that’s set year by year. But that’s not prescribed that way by statute.”

Commissioners also approved members to Committee A, Committee B, and Planning Commission. Joey Grissom was reapproved as the County’s EMA Director, with Will Maxwell as the Deputy Director.
