Exterior Renovations For Monterey’s Cate-Gill Building Discussed

The need for further renovations to Monterey’s Cate-Gill building were discussed Thursday night at a meeting of the Monterey Building and Grounds Committee.

Brad Vaughn of Monterey Medical LLC said there has been work done to improve the interior of the building. Vaughn said that tiles are being replaced and the steps are being painted black.

“When we toured with several of the alder-people they have including the mayor, have seen the need for some exterior improvement,” Vaughn said.

Other recommendations made for the exterior include landscaping, the stucco foundation and signage. There was also discussion about protecting the front entrance from flooding during heavy rains.

Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said there have been some ideas about ways to boost the aesthetics inside. The idea of displaying the pictorial history of healthcare in Monterey was one idea.

“We’ve thought about doing some sort of travelling display exhibit,” Cleary said. “Sending that in for the awards this year. We thought it would be a really neat opportunity. We’ve got some glass display cases that we’re not using right now and we might be able to transport those over to the Cate-Gill building and set those up.”

The Cate-Gill building is located on Crawford Avenue in Monterey.

Renovation costs are being split between Monterey and Monterey Medical LLC. The town is responsible for the exterior of the building, while Monterey Medical LLC is the interior.
