Algood Approves First Reading Of Wine Ordinance

Algood City Council approved on first reading an ordinance that would allow wine in retail stores.

The item was approved by referendum on the city ballot in the November election. Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said this would be the first step in the process.

“Since that has now come to pass,” Chapman-Fowler said. “We need our own ordinances to guide us and to guide them in what they will have to do to obtain wine in a retail food store.”

Chapman-Fowler said that will include an inspection fee on the licensure as well as an application to sell wine in the grocery store. Among qualifications for the application, store owners would have to supply their business name, their name, age, and address, and if they have been convicted of a felony before being allowed to sell.

Chapman-Fowler said the ordinance would require a second reading with a public hearing at its next meeting.

“This is pursuant to Tennessee state law already and this is just guidance for the city on how we’re going to handle retail food stores with the wine license,” Chapman-Fowler said.

The ordinance was approved unanimously.
