Upper Cumberland Electric Warns of Phone Scam

Members of The Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation may receive a scam phone call concerning a utility bill.

Terri Merryman with Upper Cumberland Electric Public Relations said the scammers will ask for credit card information and if the customer refuses the scammers ask for them to call another number.

“They ask you to call this customer service number and they ask you to call back 855-303-7775. And when you hang up and call that number,” Merryman said. “That call then becomes a three-way conference call. That call is routed to your actual customer service department of your utilities.”

Merryman said the scammers will stay on the line during the call.

“Now while you are on the phone with your utility company, the scammers are on the line listening for any information you give,” Merryman said. “Including your account number, your credit card information, or your bank account number.”

Merryman said the corporation urges customers to ignore these calls.

“Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation will never call members to request a credit card, banking, or other financial information over the phone,” Merryman said. “We are just not going to do that. The only kind of call you might get from our customer service will be just a gentle reminder.”

Merryman said the scammers targeted other regions before the Upper Cumberland.
