King Said Board, Sheriff Working On New Gun Law

Putnam County Director Of Schools Corby King said the school system and the Sheriff’s Department are considering the best way to deal with guns in possession of teachers on campus.

The General Assembly passed the bill this week allowing teachers and staff to carry on school grounds, based on multiple standards. King said the school system believes professional law enforcement officers are the best resource to protect students, faculty, and staff.

King said until an agreement is reached, guns are not permitted on school campuses. Governor Bill Lee has not yet signed the bill. The legislature adjourned Thursday.

“The two agencies will work together to develop a memorandum of understanding that continues to provide the best protection for our students, faculty, and staff,” King said.

King said the school board and the sheriffs department want to see the final version of the legislation before deciding the best plan forward.
