Step One for Sewer Extension Underway for New Fairgrounds

The first step in extending sewer lines to the new fairgrounds on Tennessee Avenue is underway.

Cookeville Director of the Water Quality Control Department Ronnie Kelly said they have already met with engineers to develop the scope of services needed to begin negotiating a contract for this 6 month study. Kelly said this will take lines from I-40, up Cane Creek and then over to Tennessee Avenue. Kelly said getting this project moving now is important to have the sewer project ready for Putnam County construction.

“We want to go ahead and have the plans done in case they do decide they’re moving forward, then we would move forward with our construction to get it up there to be ready when they get ready,” Kelly said.

Kelly said the next step will be having engineers survey the area. Then Putnam County leaders will let the engineers know properties and critical areas the county wants to reach, in the most cost effective manner.

“After we get the design finished, we will communicate with the County Mayor Randy Porter about their plans, are they going forward or are they sort of still on hold, or what are they gonna do,” Kelly said.

That six month date on the study is expected to start once the council authorizes signing the contract. Kelly said they want to move on this project because of Putnam County’s own design plans.

“The county’s looking to develop, and I think they’re doing some conceptual planning out there, I think you can do planning but then when do you pull the trigger on actual construction and I think that’s still up in the air with the economy,” Kelly said.
