Overton Schools Still Looking For Teachers

The school year off to a good start for the Overton County Schools, despite some vacant teaching positions.

Director of Schools Donnie Holman said the school system saw a minor enrollment increase of around 20 students during this first week.

“Seems like we have had a good beginning,” Holman said. “Teachers are teaching and our classes seem to be going well. I have visited several of the schools and I have heard feedback from the administration and seems like things are going well. We have had a good beginning.”

The school system has several open teaching positions posted. Holman said even with a few positions still open they have enough staff to handle the start of the school year. Holman said the school system should fill the positions within the coming days.

“There are some positions posted right now,” Holman said. “Luckily, there are several applicants to those posted positions. Here in a few days, we should have hopefully all of our classrooms filled.”

Holman said he credits the success to his administration for preparing early in the summer for the start of the school year.

“This is like there’s a lot of moving parts to this machine,” Holman said. “It takes a lot of us working together and a lot of planning which we have done. We have really planned and worked all summer to make sure that we had a good start.”

Holman said the school system will follow state guidelines for class size allowances. Holman said it is crucial to have enough staff to start the year.

“In order to take care of the students properly you need to have enough staff,” Holman said. “We want to make sure that every child is taken care of the best we can.”
