Representative John Rose got a chance to check out life behind the counter at a Crossville Weigel’s store Monday morning.
Rose said that he learned about the industry from store employees. He said that he even got to experience the job first hand checking out customers.
“This is a vital industry and the people that work in this industry are important to our everyday lives, so just seeing firsthand the challenges they face,” Rose said. “The challenges that the businesses face and the business owners face. There’s just no better way for that to sink in.”
Rose said that those challenges range from finding employees to come to work, to increased cost of operations.
“There’s a swipe fee and that’s a percentage and so as the price of fuel has skyrocketed, the cost for them doing business has gone up dramatically,” Rose said. “Because they have to pay more in credit card fees. So just getting an understanding of that.”
Rose said he also learned how some who depend on SNAP assistance are not able to utilize it on hot meals at convenience stores. He said that after today, he hopes to use his experience to find ways to benefit the businesses, the employees, and the people who use their services.
