Remain Vigilant To Prevent The Possibility Of Dry Drowning

Many are taking to the pool or the lake to beat the heat and are aware of the dangers of drowning, but some might not be aware of a situation called “dry drowning.”

Katie Neal is Health Educator for the Putnam County Health Department. She said that dry drowning is more common than people might think.

“Just occurs whenever the water is inhaled and it causes the muscle to spasm in the airway and it blocks airflow,” Neal said. “So it’s very easy to have it happen. It’s actually pretty common, and it can show signs right after or even 24 hours after.”

Signs of dry drowning include trouble breathing, coughing, or inability to speak. Neal said that whenever you have an episode where you might inhale water, it’s a good idea to get a medical assessment to check for any issues.

Neal said that dry drowning doesn’t just happen at the pool. She said it could occur in bathtubs, kitchen sinks, or anywhere there is a chance of inhaling water. She said it’s important for people to remain vigilant, especially parents while kids are swimming.

“It’s really easy to lose track of your child really quick and something like this can happen rather quickly,” Neal said. “It’s also good to ensure your child has proper water equipment. You know life jackets, or water wings, or another type of floatation device if they’re going to be in the water without you hands on.”
