Putnam County Schools Recruiting Substitute Teachers

The Putnam County School System is currently recruiting substitute teachers for the upcoming school year.

The School System’s Amy Hall said the search for substitutes is going very well. She said there is always a need for good substitutes because they ensure the year continues smoothly even if a teacher has to take time off.

“They are just as important to us because we have to have someone in there with them who wants them to learn, that will follow the structure that the teacher leaves for them–the guidelines, and continue their learning.”

Hall said they search for two different levels of substitutes: certified and uncertified, and that they prefer each hire to have prior experience with children. She said the prior experience helps because a full room of children can sometimes be quite daunting.

Hall said there are many reasons why a teacher may be out for a prolonged period, but that the school should always be prepared to deal with the scenario if it arises.

“We often have many teachers that need to be out for maternity leave, or they have an illness, or their child is sick,” Hall said. “We have to have our classes covered so we’re always in need of having subs available at all times.”

Hall said that, though they have been very successful in recruiting this year, that has not always been the case. She said they have struggled with numbers in years past, but are now more efficient since they revamped their substitute meeting and social media outreach last year.
