Planning Ahead For Thanksgiving In A COVID World

Thursday marks two weeks until Thanksgiving. Cookeville Regional Medical Center Infection Prevention Manager Stephanie Etter said families need to plan their approach to the holidays in a COVID world.

“I think keeping your group smaller. Maybe limit your gathering to immediate family rather then extended family,” Etter said. “Consider having your Thanksgiving in a larger location. Maybe a bigger home or different venue.”

When planning your Thanksgiving meal, Etter said families should communicate their worries and consider how to accommodate your at-risk family members.

“I think each family has to make their own decision, but I do think that high-risk groups, that age, need to be considered,” Etter said. “I think we all should follow the CDC guidelines and make modifications to our Thanksgivings.”

Etter said she recommends keeping your group to 10 to 15 people. Other Thanksgiving COVID precautions are designating a food server and eating outdoors.

“Anything you can do outside is much better,” Etter said. “That is why we want to spread out at least six feet apart whenever possible when you’re indoors. The fresh air is good. If you can even open a window if you have to be indoors if weather permits. That is a lot safer.”

One thing to consider this Thanksgiving is physical touch. Etter said as long as both members are masking, hugging your loved ones should be safe.

“If your family members are masking, hugging is okay,” Etter said. “I think each family should have a plan and talk about it ahead of time as much as possible, so people feel comfortable and know what to expect.”

Etter said buffet style meals and community drinks should also be avoided.
