Pickett County Replacing Welcome Center Gravel With Pavement

The Pickett County Welcome Center will get a new look after getting county commissioner approval Monday night.

A $45,000 paving bid from Gaddie Shamrock was approved to replace the gravel driveway and parking lot. County Executive Carey Garner said it is another step to improve visitors first impression of the county.

“We’ve built a new monument out there for the veterans and we did concrete around it and do some work around it,” Garner said. “The rest of the road parking lot and stuff is gravel and we were just wanting to make it look nicer out there. So we decided now that we’re going to blacktop it.”

The bid winner said during the meeting that the driveway at the welcome center could be expanded from 17 feet to 20 feet to make passing easier. This is being paid for with money from the Governor’s Local Support Grant.
