Overton Schools To Gauge Student Interest For JROTC Program

Overton County Schools is working to bring students a JROTC program, a first in the district’s history if achieved.

Board of Education Member Mike Hayes said surveys are being created to gauge interest and will be sent out to parents once completed.

“We talked about it a couple of years ago and kind of got to the point of meeting all the requirements and what requirements need to be met,” Hayes said. “After that, it kinda just fell away. The parents contacted me, and we are sparking the conversation back up.”

Hayes said 100 students or 10 percent of the student population must show interest to move forward with applying. Hayes said only a certain number of schools are awarded the program each year, so it will be a competitive effort.

“I think our requirements is about 100 is what we have to have interested,” Hayes said. “Hopefully, next month we will have an update on when we’re proceeding on the application process.”
