Overton Receives Grant To Host “Kinderboost” Program

The Overton County School System has been awarded a $30,000 grant to implement a readiness program for incoming kindergartners.

Curriculum Supervisor Melissa Savage said the two-week initiative is called “Kinderboost.”

“They’ll have opening song activities, things like calendar and morning circle time,” Savage said. “There will be various learning activities such as story time with extension activities from the story, learning centers and so much more.”

Savage said two teachers will lead the program held at A.H Roberts Elementary School. Savage said the classes will last from June 13th through June 24th.

“One of the great things about this program is it is inside the school,” Savage said. “They’re going to do like little field trips and scavenger hunts just to get familiar with the school system.”

Savage said a graduation celebration will be held at the end where students will receive a new backpack filled with school supplies. Savage said families can contact central office or a students prospective school to register.

“Spaces are limited, but we do have some space still available,” Savage said. “I think it is a great opportunity for a lot of hands on opportunities for the students.”

Savage said the grant comes from a national humanitarian group called Save The Children. Savage said the organization reached out to the district offering the donor funded grant.

Savage said meals will also be provided for students.
