Putnam County may have found some land for building a new fire station in the Gainesboro Grade area.
Mayor Randy Porter said he’s working through some minor issues with the property owner.
“We think we finally found a small tract that actually sits on Gainesboro Grade,” Porter said. “We had to work through TDEC for the septic permits to make sure it was going to be OK. So far, everything looks good. Hopefully, if everything works out, we’ll be able to close on that property sometime right after the first of the year.”
The county commission voted in November 2018 to purchase land for building three new stations. Two stations would serve the Monterey area, while the third would provide protection to the 10th District just northwest of Cookeville.
Porter said the county quickly closed on property for the Monterey stations, but a seller in the Gainesboro Grade area decided to back out at the last minute.
“That one has been the most difficult one,” Porter said. “The problem has been finding land in that area that someone was willing to sell and would meet our needs.”
The commission’s 2018 vote stipulated that the land purchases could not exceed $25,000.
