Algood’s annual budget of $3.344 million received approval from City Council Tuesday night.
The council unanimously approved the budget on first reading. Citizens will have a chance to comment on the budget at a May meeting before it receives a second reading.
The property rate remains at .4407 per $100.
A total of $100,000 will go toward city paving projects with an additional $80,000 in sidewalk improvements. City Administrator Keith Morrison said the city wants to continue improving Algood’s infrastructure.
“We do prioritize those by roads with worst conditions and try to work on them as expediently as we can so we do try to get through the roads that are in the worst shape,” Morrison said.
The budget includes the replacement of Fire Department Engine 1. The $638,000 price tag includes a $63,000 grant.
The council approved an additional $7900 for the Putnam County library. The system wants to add a full-time librarian to increase hours at the Algood branch.
Income in the 2020 fiscal year budget includes $1.825 million in sales tax revenue. That represents a four percent increase over the current year revenue. March sales tax revenue did show a decrease because of COVID-19 shutdowns.
The new budget goes into effect July 1. Citizens will be able to comment via phone or ask questions on Facebook Live during the public hearing.
Also Tuesday night, the council declared two parcels of land along Quinland Lake Road as surplus. The decision allows Morrison to consider the sale of both properties. Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said the city has no use for the land.
The council also approved a sewer project at 342 Mason Point by imminent domain. Morrison said he had spoken to the landowner again Tuesday trying to work through a resolution.
“The project has been going on for a long time, we need to move it forward,” Morrison said.
