York Institute Head Coach Derwin Wright said his team is in for a big test Friday night when the Dragons travel to Stone Memorial.
Stone has won three straight. The Dragons head into this game on a four-game win streak Wright said facing a Derek Samber-led offense is always a challenge and especially this year with the talent on Stone’s roster.
“Stone’s a dynamic offense,” Wright said. “They got two good runners in the backfield, well they got three. Number two, number thirty-four and the quarterback, they’re really good runners and we’re going to have to do a great job.”
The 5-2 Panthers have averaged 41 points a game in their wins and have outscored teams 205 to 51. Wright said Stone’s offense deservedly gets a lot of attention but noted their defense is just as solid of a unit.
“Defensively, they’re not a super big team, but they’re very aggressive,” Wright said. “The ends are aggressive, the linebackers are aggressive and they’re not afraid to match up and match your routes and play you man. So, they’re playing some good football right now too.”
The Panthers are anchored on defense by senior center and linebacker Cody Parker. The two-way leader has been causing offense’s headaches and has multiple 15+ tackle performances this year.
Wright said when facing an aggressive defense his team will need to be ready for chaos and ready to exploit potential openings.
“You’ve got to be able to hit quick hitters against a team like that,” Wright said. “Hit them with some counters and that kind of stuff. You know, you also have to go at them and try to get outside.”
Kickoff at 7pm in Crossville this Friday night.
