Words on Wheels Holding Cookeville Book Drive

A local Cookeville women’s group is holding a Words on Wheels book drive to promote literacy in the community on Halloween day.

Cookeville Junior Woman’s Club Education Chair Shannon O’Donnell said that Saturday’s book drive will help kids without educational support at home.

“The WOW bus goes to different locations throughout the school year, different schools, different festivals and delivers free books to children,” O’Donnell said. “That don’t have somebody at home who can read to them.”

O’Donell said that people can donate all types of gently used books at Saturday’s drive-thru drop off, from 10:00 AM to noon at 605 Willow Avenue. This year, O’Donnell said the pandemic has caused problems for literacy efforts.

“Due to COVID everything has been cancelled, we would love to be able to volunteer and read to classrooms, we would love to work with the libraries to read to children groups,” O’Donnell said. “Going forward everything just depends on what mandates and guidelines are in order.”

O’Donnell said Saturday’s collected books for teens and adults will be distributed at local group homes. O’Donnell said the community can help contribute to literacy by making book donations to Putnam County Schools.
