White Plains Historic Home Resumes Activities

Algood’s White Plains Historic Home will reopen its doors to the public on Saturday.

Friends of the White Plains Home Co-Chair Eunetta Jenkins said that after 17 months, they are excited to have visitors return the historic home for tours and sight-seeing.

“There are beautiful homes open to the public all over Tennessee, and we’re lucky that we have one here in Putnam County,” Jenkins said. “I think when they come they will see how well it has been taken care of since 1840, that the people who have lived there have loved it and continue to love it and are continuing to love it to this day.”

Jenkins said at the same time the White Plains Historic Home will be hosting their Open House, the City of Algood will also host their monthly Mingle Market at City Hall from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The market will showcase several food and craft vendors, as well as White Plains merchandise.

The White Plains Home will have board members and volunteers present for the Spring Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to lead tours.

The White Plains Historic Home was originally one of the largest plantations in the Upper Cumberland and is one of the earliest extant houses in Putnam County. The home was occupied until 2012, and since then has had some deteriorations. Jenkins said they plan on restoring the home using grant money from the UCDD.

In addition to restoring the home’s windows and and roof, Jenkins said future projects include adding another garden and hosting the Upper Cumberland Quilt Festival again this year.

“In the future during June, we will be celebrating along with a lot of other places, the 225th anniversary of the state of Tennessee,” Jenkins said. “Those announcements will be made as soon as those things are in place. We will have the home open during different times during the month–we do not have a schedule at the moment–but they will be open for tours to come in.”
