White County School Board Starts Policy Review

The White County Board of Education is beginning a group effort to review all of its policies over the coming months.

Chairperson Bob Young said he has broken the policies into smaller sections that each board member will be assigned to review. Young said they will start a log with each member’s comments that they can refer to in the future.

“You need to be looking for ‘shall’ statements,” Young said. “Because shall statements means that as a board we shall do this and there’s no, you know, it’s not an option. What we want to do is look at those policies and see what those shall statements are so that way we as a board can make sure we’re hitting those points.”

Young said the board should also be looking closely at any policies with dates assigned to them to make sure they are being enforced properly. He said they will take any policies they find issues with and adjust them throughout the review process.

“I think what we need to consider too is looking for supporting evidence that shows how those responsibilities are being carried out,” Young said.

Young said any board member who has a question about a policy should reach out to Director of Schools Kurt Dronebarger for clarification. Young said they would be working using a shared online document to determine who is reviewing which policies.
