White County Deep In Negotiations On Landfill Sale

White County officials getting closer to an agreement to sell the county landfill to winning-bidder Waste Management.

The county held an internal meeting Thursday to discuss the company’s most recent proposal. White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the county countered Waste Management’s initial proposal and has since received a new, modified offer.

“I’m not sure how many times we’re going to have to go back and forth on this,” Robinson said. “We’re close. I wouldn’t think very many. My goal is to have this ready to present to the county commission in the May meeting.”

The process of outsourcing the management of the landfill has taken some two years, Robinson said. He said once a deal is finalized, there will be a 30-60 day transition before Waste Management eventually takes over control.

“We’ll have some public meetings so that we can explain to the public what changes they may be seeing and maybe put to rest some rumors that are not exactly true,” Robinson said. “So everybody will know exactly what to watch out for and what’s going to be happening.”

Robinson said the company would definitely improve the quality of service. He said Waste Management is built to operate a landfill much better than a county government.

“I don’t know any business that the government can operate better than the private sector,” Robinson said. “There are some things that the government should do.”
