White Co. Working On Transitioning To ADA Compliance Plan

White County working to make its county buildings compliant with ADA standards.

County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said that they have evaluated all of the county buildings to see which adjustments or changes are needed.

“Then we have to put a price tag to that and then come up with a  plan to start fixing this in the future,” Robinson said. “Obviously we can’t do it all at one time, but we can start coming up with a plan to start baby-stepping this and get everything ADA-compliant.”

Robinson said that because the courthouse was built before ADA standards were implemented, certain features like the elevator width or bathroom stalls don’t meet the requirements. He said that they also need to investigate stair railings, the door handles, and even the heights of toilet seats.

Robinson said that code standards have changed dramatically since 1976 when it was built and that this plan will help bring county buildings up to date.
