White Co Election Commission Approves Election Date For Sales Tax Referendum

The White County Election Commission has set the date for county voters to decide on a sales tax rate increase.

Election Administrator Dorcus Marcum said the referendum will be the sole item for the March 14th election.

“The people have to approve it before they can increase the sales tax,” Marcum said. “It is a half of a percent before they can do that. In 2019, it passed in the city, so it has been in the city ever since then but not in the county.”

Marcum said only county precincts can participate in the election. If approved, the rate would increase from 9.25 to 9.75 percent. Marcum said elections with just one item do not happen often in White County.

“It will be a for or against vote,” Marcum said. “As for early election and election day, hours will be just the same as they always are. We will be open on election day from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Early voting hours start the 22nd of February and runs through March 9th.”

Marcum said the next step for the election commission is to appoint poll workers this month. Marcum said she assumes that staffing should not be an issue.
