White County Commission Chair Robert McCormick said he believes the relationship between Sparta and the county remains healthy.
That after concerns from city leaders about open communication regarding the landfill cell situation. The city has historically used the county landfill for garbage until the county paused residential trash intake. McCormick said while there may be some stress, the two governments will work it out.
“All the county commission, the consensus of them is they want to work with the city to solve this,” McCormick said. “I know it is frustrating for the city as well, but a lot of things hit at once. I think all of us know each other. We have good relationships, so I think we will get through this just fine.”
Sparta has explored the possibility of operating its own trash system and diverting garbage permanently. McCormick said he would like to see the city continue using the landfill. McCormick said it would benefit both governments.
“We have a huge amount of space at the landfill,” McCormick said. “It would be the best interest of the city and county both to work together. Having a transfer station is a good back up as well in case something goes wrong.”
