Obituaries For Wednesday, May 29

Graveside services and interment for Tommy Ray Woods, age 60, of Cookeville, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday May 30 at the West Cemetery. Bro. Mark Loftis will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Tommy passed away suddenly Saturday May 25, 2019 at Cumberland Medical Center.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Ruth Qualls, age 71 of Livingston, will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 11 AM from the chapel of the Hall Funeral Home of Livingston with burial to follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Overton Co. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 28th starting at 5 PM until 9 PM. Officiating the service will be Bro. Roger Bybee. She passed away at her residence on Tuesday morning, May 28, 2019 with her loving family by her side. Mrs. Betty Ruth Qualls was born in Jamestown, Fentress Co., TN on January 30, 1948 to the late Will and Mary Kathern (Warden) King. Betty Ruth was a member of the Church of Christ. She loved her family and friends very much and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Clara Norrod, age 77, of Livingston will be conducted on Thursday May 30, 2019, at 11 AM from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home. Bro. Nolan Cantrell will officiate. Burial will be in the Overton County Memorial Gardens. The family will welcome friends on Tuesday from 5 until 9 PM and again on Wednesday from 8 AM until 9 PM at Speck Funeral Home. Mrs. Clara Norrod passed from this life on Sunday morning, May 25, 2019, surrounded by her loving friends and family from the comfort of her home. She was born on in Overton County on March 9, 1942, to the late Lonzo and Bethel Shelton Walker. She loved her husband, granddaughters, siblings, and other family members dearly. She enjoyed travelling, going to church, and participating in the food ministry at the Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Dwane Head, 77, of the Big Bottom community of Jackson County, TN, will be held at 1 P.M. on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Anderson – Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro, TN. Burial will follow in the John L. Clark Memorial Cemetery in the Stone community of Jackson County. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4 P.M. – 8 P.M., Wednesday from 10 A.M. – 8 P.M., and Thursday from 9 A.M. until time of services. He passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at Select Specialty Hospital in Nashville, TN. He was born February 5, 1942, in Jackson County, TN, to the late Quarles Head and Mae Spivey Head. On June 27, 1957, he was married to Faye Phann Head, who survives. He worked as a school bus driver for the Jackson County School System, and retired after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Funeral services for Lula Mae Gentry Martin, 93, of Cookeville will be held Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 1pm in the Chapel of Presley Funeral Home with Pastors, Fred Hawkins, Cameron Wilson and Roger Cooper, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Mae Martin passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home Monday, May 27, 2019 after a brief illness. She was born Sunday, December 27, 1925 in White County to the late William “Bill” Lewis Gentry and Bonnie Lula Huddleston Gentry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step mother, Madge Gentry; her husband of 53 years, Rev. Connell “Ray” Martin; brothers, Willie Gaines Gentry and Jordan David Thomas “JD” Gentry; sisters, Mollie Kate “Kay” Huddleston, Mary Edna Flatt and Jo Nelda Harvey; and a brother in law, Carroll Wade “Chuck” Martin. Sis Mae Martin is survived by her son, Kent Martin and wife Collene of Crossville; her daughter, Judy Martin Allison and husband Glen of Cookeville; two sisters, Juanita Rhea Nation of Cookeville and Anna Pearl Ritz of Michigan; three grandchildren, Michael Shane Martin of Houston, TX, Cheryl Coffee (Terry), and Cynthia Cooper (Roger) all of Cookeville; four great grandchildren, Kristin Allison, Glendon Coffee (Olivia), Mackenzie Wallace (Isaac), Hanna Martin; and one great great-grandchild on the way; sister in law, Joyce Martin of Ohio; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 29 from 4pm to 8pm and Thursday 11am until time of services at 1pm at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Lloyd Douglas “DOUG” West, 59 of Cookeville, will be Thursday, May 30 at 1 PM from the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Algood Heritage Cemetery. Pastor Jonathan Young will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11 AM until service time at the funeral home. Mr. West went to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born July 21, 1959 in Detroit to Frances Ruby Martin West of Detroit and the late William West, Jr. He received Christ at an early age. His life devotion was studying the word and leading all souls to Christ. In his dedication to the Word he searched the Bible for the recipe for the healing oil used by the Disciples. Because of his father, the late Rev. William West, Jr., he was inspired to become a pastor. He was a data communications manager at National Bank of Detroit for 25 plus years. He had served as pastor of Believing Church of God in Christ in Detroit for over 24 years, since moving to Cookeville in 2012 he attended Trinity Baptist Church in Cookeville. He was a member of Agape Fellowship in Detroit.

Funeral services for Denny Fred Stewart, age 83, of Cookeville will be held Thursday, May 30th, 2019 at 6:00 pm in the chapel of Presley Funeral Home with Bro. Clayton Lee officiating. Burial will take place at Dodson Branch Cemetery at a later time. Mr. Stewart passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville. Denny Fred Stewart was born Saturday, August 10, 1935 in Gainesboro to the late Lowery Waymon Stewart and Nola Jane Goff Stewart. In addition to his parents, Denny Fred Stewart was preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his wife Donna Crisp Stewart; a son, John (Lisa) Stewart of Chesterfield, Michigan; three daughters, Colonel Tammy (Mickey) McKone,(USAF) of Palm Bay, Florida; Cathy (Edward) Stockwell of Chesterfield, Michigan, and Mary Ann (John) Rocco of Macomb Twp., Michigan; four stepchildren, Lester (Lisa) Montgomery of Rickman, Richard (Mary) Montgomery of Ohio, Ricky (Nicole) Montgomery of Germany, and Elizabeth Reece of Gainesboro; six grandchildren, John Stewart, Jr, Stephanie Henneberry, Eddie Stockwell, Crista Russo, Jacqueline Brogan, and Kole Rocco; five great-grandchildren, Emma Henneberry, Carter Henneberry, Owen Henneberry, Leo Russo, and Ellie Russo. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 30, 2019, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM and at Presley Funeral Home.

Memorial service for Dr. William Gene “Doc” McConnell, age 95 of Sparta, will be at First United Methodist Church in Sparta on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 10:00a.m. Dr. McConnell passed away on March 12, 2019 in Crossville. Dr. McConnell was born to Charles Martin and Aida Whitely McConnell of Council Grove, Kansas on October 17, 1923. He was their first of two sons. He was a fighter pilot instructor in the Navy in WWII. He practiced and was the owner of White County Veterinary Clinic for over 30 years. He loved to spend time with friends and family over good food, telling tales of his youth, Navy days, and memorable veterinary calls. He spent countless hours playing bridge and other card games. Most of all he loved watching any sporting event, in person or televised, with those friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Charles E McConnell, and his first wife Marilyn Woods McConnell of 38 years and his second wife Ruth Nixon McConnell of 22 years. He is survived by his daughter Leeanne Hargrove, his grandson William Hargrove, and his step-daughter Connie Stone. The family asks that donations be made to your local Humane Society, SPCA, or animal shelter or the charity of your choice instead of sending flowers.

Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Medley, age 80, of Monterey, will be held Friday, May 31st at 11:00 a.m. at Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Welch Memorial Cemetery. Her family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Medley passed away Monday morning, May 27 at Standing Stone Care and Rehabilitation.

Memorial services for Larry Hugh Brown, 84 of Baxter, will be Saturday, June 1 at 1 PM at New Home Baptist Church in the Boma Community of Putnam County. Bro. Charlie Wills will officiate. Mr. Brown died Thursday night, May 23, 2019 at NHC Healthcare of Cookeville. He was born September 26, 1934 in Boma to the late Francis Malbert and Ora Mae Anderson Brown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bert Brown. He was a 1952 graduate of Baxter Seminary. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict from 1954 to 1957, serving as a Sergeant. He was a member of New Home Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as a youth leader. Larry was a retired supervisor with the Social Security Administration with 30 years of service. Survivors include wife of 60 years (Married August 22, 1958 in Baxter) Marie Phelps Brown of Baxter, daughters Anna Brown and Glenda Medley both of Baxter, son and daughter-in-law Larry Dale and Claudia Brown of Maryville, grandchildren: Jackson Medley, Ashlyn Medley and Arianna Brown, a host of cousins. Special brother-in-law and caregiver W.O. Phelps. The family will receive friends from 11 AM until service time at the church.
