Lola Sherry Thurman, 73 of Cookeville, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Saint Thomas Midtown in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by her family. Born Friday, June 18, 1948 in Cumberland, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late George Garrett and the late Vivian Farley Garrett. She was the loving wife of Ernest Thurman for blessed 54 years. Lola was very compassionate, giving and ensuring everyone was taken care of. She retired from Dodson Branch Elementary school where she worked as a special education teacher. She also worked caring for children at the child care centers on two Air Force bases. Lola loved to shop at Wal Mart and the Dollar Tree daily, although she didn’t have any stock in the stores. She enjoyed singing at church. She worshiped at many Bapatist churches in Tennessee. Lola enjoyed making any kind of crafts. In addition to her husband Ernest, she is survived by 1 son Ernest Lee (Gail) Thurman, Jr of Sparta; 2 daughters Shelly Renea (Darin) Minnear of Cookeville, Mary Elizabeth Mullen of Anchorage, AK. A special thank you to the Doctors, nurses and care support staff on the 7th floor at St. Thomas Midtown for taking very good care of Lola. Lola chose cremation and the family followed her wishes. There will be a private family celebration of life.
Funeral services for Mr. Steve Floyd, age 66 of Sparta, will be conducted 11:00am Saturday, June 26 at First Baptist Church of Sparta with burial in Copeland’s Chapel Cemetery. Brad Walker will officiate. Mr. Floyd passed away Wednesday morning, June 23 at his residence. He was a 1973 graduate of White County High School. In the early 1980s, Steve developed an interest in flying and obtained his Pilot’s license. He enjoyed farming, golf, and teasing his nieces and nephews. Most of all, he loved being with family and his long time friends, many of whom have been friends for 60 years. He was a former manager of Coachman Men’s Store. Most notably, he has helped operate the family grocery business, Floyd’s Cash Saver, for the last 40 years. Survivors include his wife of 47 years Deborah Ray Peek Floyd, who he married on April 28, 1974. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Sparta bus fund in care of Hunter Funeral Home, PO Box 90, Sparta, TN 38583. The family will receive friends Friday from 4-8:00pm and Saturday after 9:00am at the church.
Funeral Services for Ricky Dale Loftis, age 67 of Lakeland and formerly of Baxter, will be held Saturday, June 26 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Goff Funeral Home with burial in the Weeks Cemetery in the Muddy Pond Community. Mr. Loftis passed away Tuesday, June 22. He was born February 3, 1954 in Baxter to the late Thomas (Tom) Noah Loftis and Lucille E. He is survived by his children, April Loftis of Monterey, and Bradley (Ashley) Loftis of Oklahoma.
Funeral services for Joseph Edward Peek, age 60 of Cookeville, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday June 26 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Bro. David Dalton and Bro. Dan Jones will officiate. Interment will follow at Smyrna Cemetery. Mr. Peek passed away Wednesday June 23 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center surrounded by those who loved him most. Joe was a member of Algood Church of Christ and former member and deacon of Smyrna Church of Christ. He enjoyed working in his garage and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Debbie Loftis Peek, whom he married May 5, 1979; and three daughters, Candice Peek, Erica (Dale) Spurlock, and Marissa (William) Goodale. His family will receive friends Friday from 5 – 8 p.m. and again Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time.

A celebration of life service for Raymond Howard Bowman, age 83 of Cookeville, will be held at 7pm Friday, July 2 at Crestlawn Funeral Home. Mr. Bowman passed away Saturday, June 19th at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Bowman retired as a meter reader in 1999 from the City of Cookeville Utility Department and spent his later years hunting, fishing, and working on his farm. He was known for his love of nature and animals. Over the years, he took in many stray animals and gave them homes. He was also known for his sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. His gentle nature endeared him to almost everyone that met him. Survivors include his son, Michael Bowman; and daughter-in-law, Brenda Bowman. Instead of flowers, please consider contributing to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Visitation begins at 5pm Friday at the funeral home until the time of services at 7pm.
