Obituaries For Monday, January 27

Catherine “Cathy” Gray (Smith) Raines, 70, of Cookeville, and formerly of Springfield, passed from this life, Sunday, January 26, 2020, at her home surrounded by her family. Cathy was born January 1, 1950, to the late Arthur Woodrow Smith and Alice McLean Smith and was reared in Andrews, South Carolina. Cathy was a loving daughter, sister, wife, and mother. She was a faithful member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church of Cookeville. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina holding both a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Education, and She taught in the public schools in South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee for 41 years. She taught reading at Jere Whitson Elementary since 2006, Her passion was to teach underprivileged and marginalized children. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Jim Raines, son David Raines and wife Joyce, daughters, Gray Raines and Catherine Raines, She also is survived by brothers, William Smith, of Chattanooga, and Arthur Smith of Andrews, SC. Cathy chose cremation, the family followed her wishes, and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Jere Whitson Elementary School Reading Program.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Geraldine Daniels Bowers, age 79, of Monroe will be conducted 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2020 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home. Bro. Roger Walker will officiate. Burial to follow in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. The family will welcome friends on Monday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at Speck Funeral Home. Mrs. Geraldine passed from this life on Friday morning, January 24, 2020 from the Livingston Regional Hospital. She was born March 26, 1940, in Overton County, Tennessee to the late Harlan & Claudine Holman Daniels. Geraldine was a member of the Free Communion Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, canning, taking walks, and hiking. Geraldine loved her family and grandchildren especially spending time with them. She also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and sewing. Geraldine leaves behind her daughters, Jennifer Stilts & husband Andrew of Dunlap, TN, and Jackie Campos & Fiance Gary Price Ward of Livingston, TN; sisters, Janice Goodpasture of Harriman, TN, and Sadie Neal of Livingston, TN; brother, Chatt Daniels of Spencer, TN; grandchildren, Seth Stilts, and Devan Stilts. In addition to her parents, Geraldine was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her daughters, John Stover; second husband, Cecil “Radio” Bowers; brothers, John Dudley, Joe, Billy, and Mitchell Daniels; sisters, Margaret Mildred Daniels, and Joyce Stark.

Tony Phipps And Rev. Eugene McCowan Will Officiate With Burial To Follow In The Welch Memorial Cemetery. She Went Home Peacefully To Be With Her Lord And Savior While Surrounded By Her Family At Her Sister’s Home In Cookeville, Tennessee, On Saturday, January 25, 2020. Joyce Was Born On October 24, 1947, In Monterey, Tennessee, To The Late Rev. Talmadge And Sallie Bilbrey Welch. Joyce Received Her Bachelor Degree In Elementary Education From Tennessee Technological University. She Was An Educator At Tullahoma Correctional Academy And Wrote Many Of The Training Manuals, Still Currently In Use. Joyce Loved God And All His Creatures. She Had A Love For The Arts And Was A Painter, Published Writer, Photographer And Blessed Many With Her Beautiful Voice. Joyce Was Tender Hearted, Sweet-Spirited, Compassionate, And A Loving, Selfless Person. She Was A Member Of The Mineral Springs Baptist Church. She Will Be Greatly Missed By Her Family And Friends. Joyce Was Preceded In Death By Her Husband, Jack Walker; Her Parents, Reverend Talmadge Welch And Sallie Bilbrey Welch; Sister, Patty Welch Henry; And Nephew, Mark Henry. She Is Survived By Her Loving And Devoted Family Including Her Daughter, Billie Jean Walker; Sister, Gail Tinch (Donald); Brothers, Steve Welch (Susan) And Gary Welch (Monta); A Special Cousin, Sue Glore (Richard); Beloved Nieces And Nephews, Tammy, Connie, Bryson, Carrie, Wendy, Amy, Corey, Adam, Davey, Lisa, Kathy And Pam; And Several Great And Great-Great Nieces And Nephews. Funeral services for Pamela Sue Capps, 75 of Silver Point, will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2020, beginning at 12:00 PM from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home with Bro. Herb Leftwich officiating. Interment will follow in Double Springs Cemetery in Cookeville, TN. She passed peacefully from this life Friday, January 24, 2020, at her home in Silver Point. She was born Saturday, January 13, 1945, in Oakland, California. She was the daughter of the late Mary Matthews Palk. Ms. Capps was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and friend to all who knew her, and will be remembered for her decades as owner and operator of The Rose Garden Restaurant in Silver Point. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, January 27, 2020, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and again on Tuesday, January 28, from 10:00 am until time of service at 12:00 noon.

Graveside services for Ms. Wanda Eleace Hensley, age 69 of Sparta, will be conducted 1:00pm Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Oak Lawn Cemetery. She passed away Monday morning, January 27, 2020 at Standing Stone Nursing Home in Monterey. Ms. Hensley was born October 29, 1950 in Sparta, to the late James & Myrtle Mae Presley Hensley. She was a caregiver and sitter for the elderly for many years and was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Sparta. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Bruce Ella Marshall, Carolyn Pittman, DeLida Faye Hensley, Juanita Tallent and Evelyn Youngman. Surviving family members left to cherish her memory include her son James (Elizabeth) Bowlin; Daughters: Brenda Sue Bowlin, Charlotte (Charles) Jennings, Mable (Mark) Hamby; Grandchildren: Angie Ritts, Sandra Jennings, Amber (Richard) Griffin, Charlotte (Jacob) Hartawan, Rose (Blake) Eller, Jessica Hamby, Marcus (Kristen) Hamby; Great-grandchildren: Anita & Gabriel Hartawan, Alexis & Isaiah Griffin, Aiden McCann, Grace Eller, Ally Mae Jennings, Roman Hamby; Brothers: Roger Hensley and James “Jim” Hensley. The family will not receive friends prior to the service.

The family of Hilda Jean Swisher, age 92, of Cookeville will receive friends on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Presley Funeral Home. Mrs. Swisher will be interred at a later date on her son’s farm in Knoxville. Mrs. Swisher passed away Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Signature Healthcare of Putnam County in Cookeville. She was born Thursday, April 21, 1927 in Schuylkillhaven, Pennsylvania to the late Joseph Hooker Starr and Lula Naomi Eifert Starr. Hilda Jean will long be remembered as a loving and faithful companion, mother, grandmother, sister, homemaker, and friend. In addition to her parents, Hilda Jean Swisher was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Earle Swisher and 2 brothers, David and Richard Starr. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Earle J. Swisher; a son, Robert (Sheila) Swisher of Knoxville; granddaughter, Krystal (Jim) Brown of Flat Rock, Michigan; great-granddaughter, Ren’ee Heacock of Flat Rock, Michigan; special niece and her husband, Marge (Jerry) Walter of Flat Rock, Michigan; 2 sisters, Esther Dunn of Cookeville and Evelyn Hale of California; sister in-law, Alice Starr of Canton, Michigan; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Shirley Faye Osborn, age 56, of Cookeville will be held Thursday, January 30th, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Presley Funeral Home with Pastors Ron Allen and Jim Short officiating. Interment will follow in Burris Cemetery. Shirley passed away Saturday, January 25, 2020 at her home in Cookeville. She was born Thursday, September 12, 1963 in Cookeville, Tennessee to the late William Ted Haney and Daffo V. Haney. Shirley was an active member of Living Hope Church, where she volunteered in the Food Pantry. She loved spending time and laughing with Amos “Doc” Allen, loved dancing, and loved dogs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her partner of many years, Doc Allen. She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Haney of Cookeville; 6 brothers, Willis Haney of Cookeville, Daton (Viney) Haney of Indianapolis, Indiana, Logan Haney of Cookeville, Randy (Jane) Haney of Cookeville, Jimmy (Sherron) Haney of Cookeville, and Mark Miller of Nashville; sister, Pearl (Dan) Hanlon of Washington, D.C. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM and Thursday, January 30, 2020, 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM at Presley Funeral Home.
