Warriors Baseball Team Recognized For Hurricane Relief Efforts

The White County Board of Education has recognized the high school baseball team for its Hurricane Michael relief efforts.

White County High School coaches and players traveled to Florida on two different occasions and provided assistance to at least 36 families.

It’s not the first natural disaster response for the baseball team and head coach Shaun Floyd said it won’t be the last.

“I’ve been blessed enough to have great young men play for me. I remember when Bon Air Mountain got hit with the ice storm and we had a group of young men who loaded up and delivered food and supplies to people that couldn’t get out of their homes,” Floyd said. “Any way that we can give back to people in our community and people that are in need even outside of our community, we are going to step up and do it.”

Floyd told the board of education last week that the 20 players who made the trip conducted chainsaw work at 26 location, tarped 14 homes, and removed indoor debris from four homes.

Floyd said the players made a second trip to Florida in December to provide a number of families with Christmas gifts and cash.

“Our boys stopped and talked to these young kids and they said they didn’t have anything left to play with because it had all been destroyed,” Floyd said. “We reached out to some people we knew down there and they got us in contact with several different families that had some needs.”

Floyd said the community raised enough money to provide gifts and cash donations to those families.

Hurricane Michael made landfall on October 10th as a Category 4 storm and killed at least 44 people.
