Vol-State encourages prospective students to apply for the Spring 2019 semester before Christmas.
Coordinator of Communication and Public Relations Eric Melcher said students can apply anytime from now until January 14.
“You can actually still apply just a couple of days before classes start. Maybe even on the day classes start. However, we really don’t encourage that. We want folks starting on the right foot to make it to that very first class,” Melcher said. “So we are really encouraging everyone to get it done ahead of time. I would say try to get it done before Christmas if you are thinking about it now.”
Melcher said Vol-State sees lesser enrollment numbers during the spring semesters.
“The spring is never as busy as the fall and that is actually a selling point,” Melcher said. “Because I really think it is an opportunity for folks to get in here when it is not quite so crowded to be able to get their college education started.”
Melcher said online classes put Vol-State in the position to increase the overall capacity of students.
“As usual we have hundreds of class choices between what we have on the ground at the Cookeville Higher Education Center and at Vol-State in Livingston. But then also online classes,” Melcher said. “And really we are encouraging students to mix and match. They may find one class they want to take in Livingston another they want to take at the Cookeville campus and then maybe another one online.”
Melcher said Vol-State wants to increase the total number of students but also the number of new TN Reconnect students as well.
Melcher said Vol-State has put an effort into improving community and assistance at the Livingston and CHEC campuses
“And we know it is not just taking classes, but it is also helping them with academic assistance. We have the learning commons at CHEC and at Vol-State at Livingston,” Melcher said. “Which is a place where people can go to get help with the math homework and with papers. So we know it is not enough to just attend class if you want to do well in class.”
Students at CHEC began more clubs and student activities during the fall semester.
“Certainly the emphasis is always going to be on classes and education but we want students to feel like they have a community. And CHEC has really grown into a community,” Melcher said. “Students really kind of stick together. They have their own Facebook page there. A lot of things to make it a family atmosphere and that is what we are really looking to keep growing.”
