Vol State classes will transition to online formats for the remainder of the semester beginning today.
Coordinator of Marketing and Communication Eric Melcher said the decision came from following state and federal recommendations.
“We certainly have a lot of experience with online classes to do this in such a short time,” Melcher said. “It is going to be extremely challenging, but our faculty and staff have been working very hard this week to get it done. There may be some bumps in the road. I’m sure there will be as we go froward, but we are committed to working with students to help them do this.”
Melcher said students should expect to receive the same education despite the changes.
“We have had an extended spring break to prepare is to do this,” Melcher said. “We have been reaching out to students, and all their classes to let them know how that proceeds. We know that is going to be challenging for folks. For some people, it’s going to be a new thing, but we all want to work together to make this second half of the semester successful for Vol State students.”
During the extended spring break, Melcher said professors received the appropriate training and material to transition smoothly.
Vol State also cancelled graduation, but Melcher said the campus is planning an online alternative.
“It is an important occasion for folks graduating, and we don’t want them missing out everything associated with that,” Melcher said. “So, we are going to try to do something virtual, but we don’t know what yet. It will take a few weeks of planning.”
