Van Buren’s annual trunk or treat will take place this Saturday in the parking lot of the county’s administration building.
Sheriff Eddie Carter said people handing out candy need to leave a parking space between you and the next car.
“The area is lit very well. I will be there patrolling,” Carter said. “The best part of the safety plan that we have is to bring them to a generalized location where they can still have a safe and fun environment to trick or treat in.”
Carter said if you are interested in handing out candy, arrive at the parking lot before trick or treating begins at 6:00 p.m. Masks of all forms are encouraged with candy being passed out until 9:00 p.m.
“I will be there in one of the lower parking spots,” Carter said. “They just pick out a parking space. Keep one between each vehicle involved, decorate their vehicle and prepare for the children to arrive.”
The administration building is located at 121 Taft Drive in Spencer off Highway 111 with the Sheriff’s Department sponsoring the event. Carter said emergency vehicles with flashing lights will be present to indicate the area.
“We do this every year since I was Sheriff,” Carter said. “I started it three or four years ago to make a safer environment for kids and the parents.”
Carter said he expects a good turnout for the event. Social media posts advertising the trunk or treat has reached over 2,000 hits.
