Van Buren County will help a select number of residents with home improvement projects.
Mayor Greg Wilson said the county has received more than $350,000 from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA).
“It’s a $375,000 grant that we can use to rehab homes for low-income folks,” Wilson said. “and also those that are possibly disabled and could use a ramp for their house. It’s very exciting that we’re going to be able to do several rehabs throughout the county.”
Wilson said the county will utilize an application process to help determine which homes receive repairs.
“As of right now, we’re going to lock our budget for up to 15-homes. Of course, that could be more or it could be less,” Wilson said. “It just depends one the amount of work that needs to be done for each one. There will be a certified licensed building inspector looking at each home and telling us the needs.”
Wilson said he’s hoping to begin construction on some of the homes later this summer or by early fall.
“Especially those that are needing some type of winterization,” Wilson said. “They may need updating on their heating or something of that nature as well, so we want to make sure that we get those done before winter hits.”
Van Buren County plans to open the application period after signing contracts with THDA.
