Van Buren County has opened its eighth community center walking track at the Cumminsville Community Center.
County Mayor Greg Wilson said the effort of adding the new walking tracks began approximately five years ago.
“In 2014 when I was running for county mayor, we had two walking tracks in Van Buren county – one was inside the city limits of Spencer, the other one was actually at the Fall Creek Falls Community Center,” Wilson said. “That was when I heard from people out in the county who said ‘we would like to have walking tracks at our community centers.’ Diligently working over the last few years, we have gotten grants and placed a walking track at seven of our community centers.”
County officials and State First Lady Maria Lee helped dedicate the new Cumminsville track Friday afternoon.
Wilson said the county will likely add lights to the Cumminsville track, an addition that has proven beneficial at other tracks like the one at Fall Creek Falls.
“That brings people to the Park Road and New Martin community, which is at our northern entrance of Fall Creek Falls,” Wilson said.”They get out, there are shops, and a couple of stores there. So we bring them out of the park in the evening to where they can walk, and they can actually visit some of the shops as well.”
Wilson said the total cost of the Cumminsville walking trail was just over $6,100 in total.
