Van Buren County Commissioners passed a budget continuation resolution Tuesday night for the start of the new fiscal year.
“It doesn’t appear that we’re going to have a budget by the end of the physical year for the start of the new one,” Committee A Chair Will Maxwell said. “So we need to pass a continuing budget resolution for the 2023 budget year.”
Maxwell said he expected a budget would be ready for discussion in July but said this would cover the county should deliberations take longer.
Commissioners also approved the one bid to repair the leaks in the old courthouse roof. Mayor Greg Wilson said the county attorney will draft an agreement to cover liability in an effort to protect the county from the steep work high above the ground.
Commissioner Bill Mosley asked leadership to also consider ways to stop birds from coming into the top areas of the courthouse.
“I toured the courthouse and the birds are going underneath the roof,” Mosley said. “They’re upstairs, ceilings falling, and structure on it is really damaged bad. Now, my question is, if we vote to go ahead and get it fixed for $5,000, can we look our historical society look at getting a grant to really fix it good?”
Wilson said yes, the new administration or the historical society could consider additional work. The contractor also plans to install some materials to keep the birds out.
The county has bid the courthouse repairs multiple times without getting a bid.
