What was not expected at the beginning of the season has now evolved to be one of the biggest football games between two Upper Cumberland high schools in recent history. The 5-0 Dragons from York Institute put their region championship hopes on the line when they line up against 6-0 Upperman at 7pm in Baxter.
Upperman who currently is #1 in Class 3A Region 4 comes into the game outscoring their opponents 235 to 19 behind one of the most prolific players in the Upper Cumberland, QB Donoven McAllister. McAllister leads the Bees offensive attack with 982 All Purpose Yards while Running Back powerhouse Blake Metzgar has amassed 760 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.
York’s daunting rushing attack is the bread and butter of the Dragon offense which has averaged 370 yards per game racking up a total of 1,853 yards on the ground this season. The Dragon’s 4 headed monster of Thomas Miller, Cole Cooper, Josiah Heddings and Landrick Leffew represent 1,707 of the 1,853 rushing yards this season. York has only attempted 17 passes in their 5 games this season and truthfully, they haven’t needed to as they have jumped to early leads outscoring their opponents 97 to 30 in the first half of their games.
Defensively, both teams boast a stingy defense that doesn’t bend much to their opponents. The Dragon D led by Landrick Leffew with 38 solo tackles and 1 sack has only given up 3 touchdowns, and only giving 3.2 yards per rushing attempt. Upperman’s dynamic duo of McAllister and Metzgar are joined by Nicolas Stacey, Connor Bryant, Zach Stewart and Jake Dutchess have swarmed opponents in only allowing 19 points over six games. The Bees have recorded 13 sacks and 9 interceptions thus far however those stats will be hard to pad with York’s persistent run scheme.
In all, get your popcorn ready.. It’s going to be a dandy..
