The UCHRA Policy Council sees a need for more training on how to better handle adverse childhood experiences.
Council members and program staff spent over an hour Wednesday discussing underlying issues and traumas families face. Executive Director Mark Farley said the goal is to do a better job keeping children out of group homes.
“If we can help see and understand the long term effects, I think that would pay great dividends,” Farley said. “I think that’s an area though we need to look at and see from a region standpoint how do we more solidify the structure.”
Substance abuse and mental health issues were identified as root problems for abuse and neglect in the region. Farley said offering training through local churches and law enforcement could be a way to drive the initiative.
