TWRA Wants Hunters To Review Safety Tips

In the wake of a hunting accident earlier this month, The TWRA is asking hunters to review hunting safety tips.

Wildlife Information Specialist Mimi Barnes said one big rule is to wear bright orange when you’re out in the woods.

“That hunter safety orange, everybody is aware of it and everybody knows it,” Barnes said. “It’s vital and really can keep not just hunters safe, but anybody going into the woods this time of year if they know there’s hunting in the area.”

A Knoxville man suffered a fatal gunshot wound in Morgan County November 8 after someone mistook him for a deer. Just this past Friday, a hunter in Madison County suffered serious injuries after falling from a tree stand.

Barnes said hunters should always know what they’re shooting at. She says humans sometimes get mistaken for game due to hunters not double-checking the target.

The TWRA recommends that hunters follow the 10 hunting commandments during their outings.

“Just keeping that safety list in mind and reviewing a little bit is important,” Barnes said. “We hope people review those laws and have a great season as they enjoy their time outside.”
