A Tuesday morning scam across Cumberland County features someone calling from what appears to be a local number, representing himself as a lieutenant with the Cumberland County Sheriffs Department.
Public Information Officer Gary Howard said the caller said he wants to talk about a civil suit involving the resident. He represents himself as Lt. James Perry of the Sheriff’s Office.
Howard said the person is not associated with the department of any legitimate law enforcement agency.
“It is important to note that law enforcement agencies and legitimate government entities will never request personal information or payment over the phone in relation to civil suits or legal matters,” Howard said. “If you receive a call from the aforementioned number or encounter a similar situation, please do not provide any personal information or engage with the caller.”
The scammer is using the local number (931) 240-0332.
