It is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, a time where communities thank officers for risking their lives to protect yours.
Sparta Police Chief Doug Goff said if you know a officer personally, he encourages you to thank them for the service.
“We are human and we just want the community to appreciate what all we do, and I think sometimes it is just a lack of recognition for what an officer goes through on a daily basis,” Goff said.
Goff said the general public often does not realize the daily dangers an officer faces. Goff said officers never know when the next call could turn into a life or death situation.
“The job is relentless sometimes,” Goff said. “You never know on a day-to-day basis what the call will be. A lot of times when you see an officer and they may be talking to another officer, sometimes people think they have it made. That is not the case. My prayer is for each officer to make it home at the end of their shift and be safe.”
Goff said police officer are common people that want to serve. Goff said they sacrifice family time, holidays and normal life to train for your protection.
