Tabled Rezoning Up For Consideration Thursday

A rezoning request to allow bulk propane sales will be reconsidered by the Cookeville City Council Thursday.

The request from Upper Cumberland Rental and Sales would rezone property on Boyd Farris Road from commercial industrial to light manufacturing.

CI zoning district do not allow bulk propane sales, but two adjoining properties are already zoned LM, according to Planning Director James Mills.

“The LM fits into the classification of our 20-30 plan and the properties that touch this can have the propane sales,” Mills said. “It’s basically denying the property owner the same rights that adjoining property owners would have.”

The city council tabled the ordinance earlier this month after a homeowner  on Boyd Farris Road voiced her opposition to the plan.

Catherine Wallace said various families feel threatened that their residential space will decrease.

“While we would never wish any ill will towards somebody trying to build their business, we have a duty to maintain the integrity of the lands adjacent to our property that divide us from the current mix use property,” Wallace said. “There are six of these properties located on Boyd Farris Road. Collectively these businesses already create congestion and unorganized entry to our road.”

Wallace said she and her husband Joseph Wallace spoke with seven families who had the same opinion.
