T-DOT To Evaluate Need For Sparta Crosswalk At Carter St. Bockman Way

Sparta waiting for feedback from T-DOT on the possibility of creating a crosswalk at Carter Street and Bockman Way.

City Administrator Brad Hennessee said the state department has completed a preliminary onsite evaluation.

“At this point, we’re looking to see if it is something that we can get T-DOT to fund,” Hennessee said. “It’s unlikely it will be totally funded by them. When they come back to us with what they can or can not do, then the city will look at what we need to do.”

Hennessee said he relayed the request to T-DOT after feedback from a local resident. Hennessee said he was told pedestrians have been crossing the street regularly.

“The request that I had that I relayed to T-DOT was there are people crossing there on the upper side opposite of the bridge and going across and traveling up that sidewalk up the hill,” Hennessee said. “It’s one crosswalk. It’s not across Bockman Way and then across Carter Street to get to the other sidewalk. It’s on the upper side, so it would be the lateral crosswalk of Bockman Way.”

Hennessee said T-DOT will conduct a foot traffic study to see if a new crosswalk is needed. Hennessee said a time frame of when that will happen is unknown at this point.

“I don’t know if it is high volume or low volume, but I tend to think its lower volume just for that fact there wasn’t a crosswalk put there during the recent multi-modal,” Hennessee said. “The multi-modal project a few years back did several crosswalks on Bockman Way and that one was not included.”
