This comes after the National University System awarded Flatt with the Sanford Teacher Award for Tennessee.

Flatt, a fourth grade math teacher, admits that she was surprised to receive the award.

“I completed the application form months ago and kind of forgot about it,” Flatt said. “One afternoon I was checking my email and got the email that I won. I was totally surprised.”

The National University System searches for teachers that create an inspirational and harmonious classroom.

Flatt said when it comes to teaching, everything goes back to building relationships with the students.

“My relationships with my kids, it begins far before they ever enter my classroom. I try to get to know them in bus duty and in the hallways,” Flatt said. “Small things like that make a big difference and I try to find things that I can relate to the kids about.”

The award aims to recognize teachers that support student development and achievement. Flatt also received $10,000 as a part of the award.
