NWS: Tornado Touched Down North Of Smithville

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down on the northern side of Smithville Monday afternoon.

A tornado debris signature on radar confirmed the touchdown, according to a Weather Service Meteorologist. Emergency management reported extensive tree damage on the northern side of Smithville, along Nashville Highway and Allens Ferry Road. Allens Ferry Road shutdown as of late Monday afternoon because of the damage.

Amateur radio operators reported extensive damage to a home at the intersection of Highway 56 and Smith Road. A roof caved-in and structural damage reported. Several other homes in that area also showing damage. Emergency officials reported a home on North Congress Blvd suffered severe damage.

A mobile radio operator estimated 80 mph winds on Sparta Hwy at around 4:54pm.

At 4:33pm, the National Weather Service reported a “large TDS in Smithville” with a tornado moving across north side of city. A tornado debris signature shows on radar as trees, building materials, or other items pulled into the funnel cloud from ground damage.

In White County, storms dissipated, but still produced large hail, according to emergency officials. Large trees reported down on Hickory Valley Road just south of Panther Drive in Sparta.

The Weather Service said a team will be deployed to Dekalb County Tuesday for closer assessment.
