Summer fun for kids has not been cancelled for at least one local summer camp this year.
The Cedar Lake Camp will begin seeing kids for overnight camp in June. Executive Director Ryan Higgins said they are implementing safety measures.
“The parents are going to do a wellness check before the kids ever come to camp,” Higgins said. “Parents are the first line of defense, and then when they get to camp they’ll speak with our camp nurse. We’ll do a final screening to make sure kids aren’t running temperature, and they haven’t had any exposure to the virus.”
Frequent hand washing and periodic contact with parents will also be apart of camp life. Higgins said the CDC will give the staff guidelines how to safely operate over the summer. Higgins said social distancing will be easy on the 90 acre camp.
“We spend a whole week with our staff before camp begins and we talk about all aspects of camp life,” Higgins said. “Cabin life, even down to the daily schedule, safety, policies and procedures, taking the kids to the pool, and all aspects of that. Among that, we’re going to cover some COVID training this year.”
Ranging from 30 to 100 children per week in a typical summer, Higgins said he’s expecting to see fewer kids this year.
“This is an unprecedented time for our county, our culture, and for camp,” Higgins said. “We honestly have no idea how many kids are going to come to camp, but we do hope the kids come to camp and get to experience the outdoors and get to have fun like they’ve always have.”
Hiking, berry picking, fishing, baking, and swimming are some of the activities the camp offers.
