The state has awarded Byrdstown $3.3 million to rehabilitate its water system.
The town submitted a joint water plant project with Pickett County to be funded by its allotment of federal COVID infrastructure money. Mayor Sam Gibson said engineers will start the planning process now that the work is moving forward.
“This will give us an opportunity to do that without increasing water rates throughout the county,” Gibson said. “This will be a big benefit to all of our water members. Over the next few years, we will have some progress to be made.”
The project will create a new retention pond. Gibson said the current basin regularly faces sink holes which caused the state to mandate the project. Gibson said leftover money will be used to improve the sewer plant as well.
Gibson said a some $600,000 match will be required by the town and county. Gibson said the municipalities have the local funds to make the project happen.
