The National Rolley Hole Marbles Championship and Festival has received state recognition for its contributions to cultural life.
Event Coordinator Shawn Hughes said the annual event brings some of the country’s best marble players to Hilham’s Standing Stone Park.
“This is such an important event and tradition for everyone involved,” Hughes said. “The players, the tradition bearers, staff, volunteers and sponsors I am just so proud on their behalf.”
Hughes said the 38th championship was just recently completed. Hughes said the Upper Cumberland’s love for marbles keeps the tradition alive.
“It’s the love by the players, the tradition bearers and all the people that attend each year,” Hughes said. “It’s also what used to be not unique and today it is. This event now is something that you would see no where else in the world. Now, it’s a Upper Cumberland and Tennessee treasure.”
Standing Stone is the only state park in the nation with a marble yard. The Tennessee Governor’s Arts Award honored the marble event for its folklife heritage.
