The City of Spencer will host its 22nd annual fireworks display Wednesday.
Mayor Alisa Farmer said families come from miles around for live music at 7:00pm and the fireworks display at 9:00pm. She said the event used to generate little turnout, but now cars park up and down both sides of Highway 111 to catch a glimpse.
“I think it just brings a sense of unity and pride,” Farmer said. “Not only to our local Van Buren Countians but to everybody. It’s just one time of celebration that brings us together.”
Farmer said donations and sponsorships from local businesses are still trickling in. She said the community excitement and the contributions of those local businesses speak to the rich patriotism in Spencer and Van Buren County.
“I think it means that we are all proud to be Americans,” Farmer said. “I think it means that we appreciate the country that we live in and what it took for us to be as free as we are, and I think we don’t need to let those freedoms go.”
The event takes place behind the Burritt College Building on Spring Street. She said concessions would be available at the nearby fairgrounds. Small town band “Rapture” will provide the entertainment. She said year after year, people from Fall Creek Falls and counties even farther beyond show up and the display itself has improved mightily in recent years.
“Of course, you know, we’re on top of a mountain so you can see the fireworks from quite a distance,” Farmer said. “So, it’s turned out to be quite the show.”
