Sparta to Solicit Bids for New South Carter Pavilion

The City of Sparta will begin to solicit bids for a new pavilion on the south end of South Carter Street.

City Manager Chris Dorsey said the city hopes to have a pavilion near the size of the one on South Carter by Bockman Way.

“Maybe a different design to try to take advantage of the terrain. There is a hill that drops off behind the parking lot over there,” Dorsey said. “And if we are able to build the front level with that hill, it will make that ADA-accessible. And then hopefully be able to capture the views of the river up there. So maybe we will have more than just a box.”

Public Works director Dillard Quick said the pavilion was budgeted for last year, but the department never got to the project.

“We are going to try to do a preliminary what we think it is going to cost and get an as big pavilion, as nice of a pavilion we can get. Before we try to bid it out. But this is a budgeted item, I think we have $20,000. The public works guys are going to build it and it would be a good winter project for us.”

Quick said Public Works could work on the pavilion bidding and design during February.

The bids would regard the building materials needed for the pavilion.

The Sparta Board of Aldermen and Mayor authorized the solicitation at the Thursday meeting.
