Sparta To Replace Boards Across Railroad Bridge

City of Sparta gathering building materials to make repairs to the city’s railroad bridge located off of South Carter Street.

Public Works Director Dillard Quick said the city is going to take to replace the walking boards and hands rails that are currently on the bridge. He said they have replaced various boards over the years, but it is time to do major overhaul.

“The boards on there are rotting, they’re not treated boards,”  “So it’s come to a point now that we just need to replace those boards with the treated-style board because it’s old and non-treated. So we’re going to put treated boards down and hopefully, it will last a long time.”

Quick said there have also been issues with kids vandalizing the bridge. He said they hope the work will stop that from happening in the future once the treated wood boards are laid down and then screwed together.

“Young kids middle school, high school they can go out there and take a crowbar and take some of the boards off and throw them in the water, and then the person comes through walking an d there’s a big gap,” Quick said. “So we’re going to try to alleviate that problem also by screwing the boards together.”
